Hello, my name is Bat St. Chip. I grew up haunted Catholic in Scranton, Pennsylvania and am currently based out of Pittsburgh, PA.
My childhood obsession with the world of fae turned into a fervent study of the occult, as an adult.
My work explores how humans use esoteric symbolism to gain hope during difficult times and asks questions like “Are these symbols autonomous beings?” “Can you engage with ideas to petition the divine?” “Is art a telephone to the unknown?”
I was introduced to the unseen by my two grandmothers. Friday night slumber parties included trips to dark cathedrals.
“God is in that box”, my Nanny whispered. I imagined God’s eyeballs ripped out in
the tabernacle. I was horrified and filled with wonder. I was puzzled how a man-made object could contain a large inorganic entity.
